Why do global water challenges constitute a strategic priority for the United States and other regions? For more than one-sixth of the Earth's human population—more than 1 billion people—finding and gathering clean, safe drinking water are issues of daily survival. More than 2.6 billion people in the world lack access to basic sanitation facilities, such as a hygienic latrine. And these numbers are projected to increase greatly in the future. It is estimated that 135 million people could die of water-related diseases by the year 2020—more than will fall victim to the growing HIV/AIDS pandemic. Why is it widely believed there is a looming global water crisis? Why should policymakers adjust the current approach to solving this crisis? |
