Water and Energy Futures in an Urbanized Asia: Sustaining the Tiger

The CSIS Global Strategy Institute sought out experts from nongovernmental organizations and academia to examine the complex simultaneous phenomena of rapid urbanization, resource management, and the broader public policy challenges and opportunities in Pacific Asia. Expert contributors considered the following questions: What are the most promising technological innovations to promote environmentally sustainable economic growth? What factors are most significant in driving change? How are priorities assigned, and how are those priorities changing? How are the players changing? What kinds of policies, regulations, and other governance tools help identify trajectories that at once promote economic development and address environmental degradation?

Senator Pete Domenici speaking at the White Paper release on Capitol Hill on September 28, 2005.
The Center for Strategic and International Studies and Sandia National Laboratories released a White Paper outlining the major conclusions of the Global Water Futures project. The goal of the project was to generate fresh thinking and concrete policy recommendations on how the United States can (1) better address future global water challenges and (2) more efficiently leverage and deploy available technologies. The White Paper, "Addressing Our Global Water Future," meets these goals by exploring four themes supported by fourteen main "Findings" that together highlight the core tenets of an integrated, comprehensive U.S. foreign policy toward global water challenges.
